Why do you show a circle overlay?
WhatsApp crops every display picture into a circle wherever it's shown. The dimmed corners mark what gets trimmed away, so you can keep your face inside the visible circle.
Should I crop my photo or keep the whole thing?
Turning off "Fill frame" keeps every pixel of your original photo and adds letterboxing if the aspect ratio doesn't match. Turning it on crops the photo to exactly fill the 500×500 square with no bars.
Will WhatsApp compress my photo further?
Yes, WhatsApp applies its own compression on upload regardless of the file you send. Starting from a clean, correctly-cropped square gives that compression the best source to work with.
